SICILY
It begins with a few days visiting UNESCO World Heritage listed buildings in Palermo where there is a syncretism between Western, Islamic and Byzantine cultures. We spend a day at nearby Monreale and Cefalú and visit to the regional art gallery and archaeology museum. Leaving Palermo we drive to Segesta to see the ancient temple and theatre and then continue to Poggioreale. Here we meet the local archaeologist and enjoy a tutorial and the opportunity to handle artefacts. Two nights in Marsala provide an opportunity to explore the island’s Phoenician history at the local archaeology museum and on the nearby island of Motya.
The stunning temples at Selineute and Agrigento are a legacy of Greek colonies founded in the middle of the 5th century BCE. Leaving Agrigento we drive inland through spectacular scenery to visit the exquisite Roman mosaics at Piazza Armerina before continuing to Taormina in the shadow of Mt Etna. We cross the Strait of Messina to visit the archaeology museum at Reggio Calabria before driving to Syracuse where we spend three nights. In Syracuse we visit archaeology sites and spend a day taking in the late baroque towns of southeast Sicily.
This tour’s focus is on Sicily’s rich archaeological and cultural heritage but also provides opportunities to explore and discover the vibrant culture and cuisine that awaits travellers to the island today.
